What is Computer?

You are reading the difference between Hardware and Software and also we know in this article what is a computer and its components. A computer is a programmable electronic system that takes raw data as input and processes it using a collection of instructions (a programme) to generate an output. It produces output immediately after performing mathematical and logical operations, and it can save the output for later use. It can handle both numerical and non-numerical calculations. The word “machine” comes from the Latin word “computare,” which literally means “to measure.”

What is Computer?

A computer is a device that is used to run programmes and offers a range of solutions with the use of integrated hardware and software. It uses programmes to work and portrays decimal numbers as a string of binary digits.

It also has a memory for storing records, programmes, and processing results. Hardware refers to the components of a device that include cables, transistors, circuits, and hard discs. Software, on the other hand, refers to the programmes and data.

The Analytical Engine, which was invented by Charles Babbage in 1837, is thought to be the first machine. It had read-only memory in the form of punch cards. Charles Babbage, also known as the “Father of the Machine,” is credited with inventing the computer.

The following are the basic parts of the computer.
  • A processor is a device that executes software and hardware instructions.
  • The primary memory for data transfer between the CPU and storage is memory.
  • The motherboard is the part of a computer that links all of the other parts and components.
  • A storage device, such as a hard drive, is a device that holds data indefinitely.
  • An input device, such as a keyboard, helps you to communicate with the computer or enter data.
  • The output device, such as a computer, allows you to see the output.

Computer Hardware:

The physical components of a computer and associated equipment are referred to as computer hardware. Motherboards, hard drives, and RAM are examples of internal hardware products. Monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, and scanners are examples of external hardware.

Components refer to the internal hardware components of a computer, while peripherals refer to external hardware devices. They all come under the category of computer hardware when taken together. Software, on the other hand, is comprised of computer programmes and applications. Since the software runs on computer hardware, it is common for software programmes to have device specifications that specify the minimum hardware that must be installed in order for the software to function.

There are two types of software:

  1. System Software
  2. Application Software

System Software:

The device software is a set of programmes that run, monitor and expand the computer’s processing capabilities. The majority of system software is created by computer manufacturers. These software products are made up of low-level language programmes that communicate with hardware on a very basic level. The interface between the hardware and the end-users is provided by system software.

Operating systems, compilers, interpreters, and assemblers are all examples of System software.

Application Software:

Application software products are created to meet a specific need in a specific setting. Application software encompasses many of the software programmes produced in the computer lab.

A single programme, such as Microsoft’s notepad for writing and editing simple text, maybe considered application software. It may also be a software package, which is a series of programmes that work together to complete a mission, such as a spreadsheet package.

• Difference between Hardware and Software
Hardware is the physical components of a computer that enable data to be processed. A collection of instructions that tells a machine exactly what to do is known as software.
It is made in a factory(means manufactured by Company). It has been designed and built.
Without software, hardware cannot perform any operation. Without electronics, applications cannot be executed.
We can see and touch hardware since it is made up of physical electronic components. We can look at the software and use it, but we can’t touch it.
Input devices, output devices, storage, and internal components are the four major categories. System software, programming software, and application software are the three major categories.
Software viruses have no impact on hardware. Computer viruses have an effect on software.
It cannot be electrically transferred from one location to another through a network. It may, however, be moved.

Damaged hardware is replaced with new hardware. If software is disabled, it can be reinstalled from a backup copy.
For example, a keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer, CPU, hard disc, RAM, and ROM are all examples of hardware. For example, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, MySQL, and so on.
